I’m from Ohio and republicans have this state gerrymandered AF. However, not only did voters “win” a special election to keep Ohio 50% plus one, but they also passed abortion/reproductive freedom and weed. And this Roevember, voters will also be voting to end gerrymandering. FINALLY. Voters have fought for this since 2015 !!! If this passes, districts will NOT be picked by politicians, but by a committee. 🤘🏼

Let’s send the GQP packing !!!!

…and of course, the Ohio GQP is fighting the abortion law to the bitter end. They’re trying to say the ban is still in effect. 🤷‍♂️

They will in Missouri too. We voted to expand Medicaid years ago, and the state legislature still won't fund it. They just flagrantly violate the law, and keep getting away with it.

How can they do that? Refuse to expand on it i mean. Theres alot they get away with and nvr have to anw for, its wrong. Im from Louisiana unfortunately

We're working on it.

This fellow Buckeye thinks that we can take our state back. I'd like to see David Pepper run for Governor in 26.

Turning in my petitions this week. They are confident it will get on November’s ballot and pass.

Hopefully that’ll help Sherrod Brown.

Sherrod will win. He's running against a real piece of shit in Moreno.

Oh I sure hope so. Sherrod is a good guy

Future Majority Leader?🤔

I’d like that.

Brown v Moreno? That’s interesting. Just the names I mean, I’ve already donated to Brown.

How does the upcoming vote on gerrymandering work? Is it another referendum or some sort of special election? Great news, wish we could vote it away everywhere.

Expand full comment

The Ohio anti-gerrymandering group, Citizens Not Politicians, is led by a retired Ohio state supreme court justice. The amendment would create a bi-partisan commission comprised of citizens (but no elected officials) to supervise the redistricting of the state.

We are turning in our signed petitions this week. We will have enough to put it on the ballot.

Expand full comment

We can flip our state just like Michigan did.

Expand full comment

They had to get many, many signatures to be able to put it on the ballot. But I guess they have that part under control. I think this is going to finally put a check on the cheating GQP. I think this is what Wisconsin went thru a few years ago? Or is still battling?? For Ohio, I just think it’s going to be on the November ballot? Ohio has been run by republicans for nearly 50 years.

WI is in much better shape since they flipped the WI Supreme Court with the special election last year.

Great news ! Keep up the fight. Thumbs up from Massachusetts ! 👍👍💙💙💙

It is so nice to hear some good news. I read many Substacks & listen to many podcasts all related to politics & the Supreme Court & it can sure get demoralizing; so something like this gives me hope that we can fight back.

Thanks! I will watch for news of it passing!

This is wonderful news! Missouri Democrats have set an example for Democratic minority legislators elsewhere—it IS possible to fight back 💜

Not just possible, it is essential.

Great news, Jess. Missourians still have to get out and vote for the initiative in the fall, and I imagine the Republicans have a few other dirty tricks up their sleeves, but it seems appropriate to enjoy this victory for Missouri women. On another note . . . 6000 pregnancies due to rape since the end of Roe?

Christ, that is a shamefully large number. Do the regressives in the Missouri legislature even pretend to care about that? Or is that Joe Biden’s fault, too?

Expand full comment

Not to mention Texas, which has 10X the amount of rapes of Missouri. All since Greg Abbott promised the citizens of Texas that his administration would do the impossible and STOP all rapes.

He really said that!

Expand full comment

Wow, that’s awful, Walter. You know, when I first read the post, I was shocked at the number of pregnancies in Missouri due to rape since the end of Roe. Then it occurred to me, that number does not include rapes that did not result in pregnancy. I know that violence against women in this country is a major problem, but I guess I never considered the actual numbers. It’s shocking. And disgusting. And sickening. And it does not get talked about enough.

Expand full comment

Yes, it’s disgusting. The actual number of pregnancies as a result of rapes in Texas in the first 19 months after Roe fell was 26,000.

The total number in all of the states with vans was 65,000. Neither of those numbers include rapes that did NOT result in pregnancy, nor does it count the number that we know went unreported.

All of that sexual violence against women & young girls, children is scandalous. Don’t just vote blue in

Roevember, vote for women Democrats every chance you get.

Expand full comment

Those numbers are just staggering. I don’t know what the solution is to the problem of violence against women. I only know that doing nothing, ain’t it.

Jess, congratulations and thank you and all the others who are determined not to let corruption take over your state. What an example you set for everyone who has gasped in disbelief at what is happening to our country because of holier-than-thou Republicans.

You said, " Without deceit, voters can decide what is in their best interest." Isn't that the way it's supposed to be? Not just in the interest of Republicans who support one of the most deceitful persons in the history of our country.

Lord, I hope you're right. I moved here from Texas in 2016, and at the time it felt like a calculus to move to a more moderately political state (that's not why we moved here, but it helped make my husband and I feel better about it). At that time there was a democratic governor and senator, and I remembered in 2008 the presidential vote in Missouri being so close it literally took them weeks to figure out who the winner was. Of course all of that changed post-2016. I believe the moderates and liberals are still out there. I am hopeful that the MAGA fever is breaking and we can hopefully get back to some semblance of sanity in this state, even if it takes a few election cycles. Maybe I'm being naively optimistic, but I think Crystal Quade and Lucas Kunce both have fighting chances of winning this November, and I feel certain the abortion question will pass.

Expand full comment

Crystal Quade isn’t even known in St. Charles County, population 400,000+. I wish more could be done about that. I realize we’re not quite to August yet, but Kehoe has been running ads (crazy ads) in STL for at least six weeks. Unfortunately, my disability prohibits me from doing as much as I’d like at my age. I’d love to go back to a dem governor. Eight years of Mr. Ed has been enough.

Quadrant must not have much cash to work with in her campaign war chest, & I’d bet the DNC isn’t helping her out very much bc they perhaps don’t think she’s likely to win. Those decisions they make sometimes really piss me off. I feel that just a little help from the national organization might be all they need to get them over the finish line.

I’ve become a monthly donor to Lucas Kunce several months ago, but until tonight I’d never seen Crystal Quade’s name. I live in NM, but I am trying to donate a small amount monthly to all the Democrats that I possibly can afford.

We simply must take our states back

I’ve also made donations to the Abortion ballot Initiatives in several states FL, AZ, & MO. I feel very strongly about women’s rights.

*Quade - not Quadrant 🙁

Yes, they are. On Xitter today, Dick Durbin was taking massive amounts of flack for saying he wouldn’t investigate Alito. Why bother having a damned Judiciary Committee if you won’t even try to do anything?

I wonder what Sheldon Whitehouse thinks about that?

I live in South Dakota and here a similar effort to change the initiative process failed as well--our effort to codify abortion into the constitution will be on the ballot (if efforts of the Decline to Sign folks who are systematically calling petition signers to try and cajole and lie and trick folks into removing their signatures from the petition don't succeed--the latest effort of the SD legislator's interested in preventing SD citizens from voting on the amendment).

I hope we're on the same track as Missouri, but as our Governor has proven over the last several weeks, bloviating and lying about immigrant hordes and meetings with dictators that never happened (real Korean not wannabe Trump) and killing misbehaving pups and stinky billy goats, I don't have much confidence that even if passed, the state won't find some way of overturning the will of the people (as they did when said Governor challenged the vote of the people to legalize medicinal and recreational marijuana use and overturned that vote leaving only medicinal use in the state). At least it's on the ballot so we can see how South Dakotans feel about protecting some access to reproductive health choice for women.

Expand full comment

I heard about that terrible sneaky snake, underhanded Decline to Sign bull in SD from Jessica Valenti’s TikTok!!

Seems pretty obvious that reproductive rights are popular & that Republicans really don’t want you to have those rights. It’s really a shame that they feel it’s necessary to resort to cheating.

That's awesome news for the residents of Missouri!

Indiana is one of 24 states that doesn't have citizen-led ballot initiatives. So, we're stuck under a GOP supermajority with no chance of ending the state's abortion ban. We have to somehow flip the state's government, which is heavily gerrymandered.

Expand full comment

Perhaps start a movement to amend your state’s constitution, adding the right to initiate and recall. Quote the US Constitution’s 14 amendment that says states shall treat the citizens of other states equally, and the part of the Declaration of Independence about the right to redress of grievances.

Expand full comment

I'm proud of the Democrats in our legislature who didn't give up the fight for our rights. And for the 380,000 petition signers. I know there will still be a battle ahead, but things are looking more hopeful every day!

Expand full comment

I’ve been following your documentation of your battle to rescue Missouri from the clutches of the red plague. I’m so happy you gained a significant victory. The first crack in the wall, second one will be codifying reproductive health care in November. Next battle could be ridding the state of the gerrymandering laws that suppress fair voting in Missouri. (I’m assuming that’s still going on in Missouri). Here in Michigan we’ve done that, there’s been bumps along the way but it’s working.

Keep up the great fight. You’re a hero for all democracy loving Missourians!
