She is also responsible for the largest Covid superspreader event when she refused to cancel the Sturgiss Motorcycle rally at the height of Covid over the objections of the citizens of Sturgiss who wanted it cancelled.
She is also persona non grata on several tribal nation's lands that fall within the borders of SD.
Thank you for writing this, Jess! I have been fuming over this all weekend as an animal rescuer, lifelong pet owner, horse owner, rural dweller, and former shelter manager.
The story is so outrageous and the fact that she chose to share it makes it that much more of an abomination. I’d like to think she made the whole thing up, thinking it would appeal to a certain class of people but who would be that craven?!
As you say in your closing, whether Democrat or Republican, no one likes an animal abuser. If there’s one animal on earth most universally loved, it has to be dogs.
Yes, sharing it in her book was either a calculated attempt to demonstrate her “toughness” to the Donald (or whomever), or it actually is something she is proud of doing. Either way, she is one nasty momma of a dog.
I live in South Dakota-west river...west of the Missouri River-she is constantly out here..She has been banned from at least 4 Indian Reservations...She has been gadflying with state funds while campaigning for Trump-she has been in an affair with Trump's Media advisor Cory Lewandoski and her husband has left the Governor Mansion......we are very disappointed with her continued lack of respect for the decent folks of South Dakota.......she has become very corrupted by her ambition-I feel she no longer represents the honest ranchers and farmers she touts as her roots...shameful..
I live in the reddest county in Virginia. It's a rural county (not even a single stoplight in the entire county) and we basically all have guns. I can't think of a single person here who would shoot a puppy under these circumstances. Thank you for correcting the record and not letting Noem get away with saying that this is just what rural people do. It's not normal, and quite the contrary. What she proudly described in her book is twisted and sick behavior.
Anyone who kills a dog that hasn't been properly trained is lacking in both brains and heart. Why, oh, why, South Dakota people, did you elect her? She needs schooling.
Noem's behavior is frightening on so many levels... the audacity that she feels empowered to kill other beings and then wrote about it in her book as if it is acceptable behavior. Perhaps she may be able draw a line between killing a non-human and killing a human, but there are many folks reading her story that would not. Her story perpetuates gun violence in all forms, including murder with guns. Thank you, Jess, for this important piece.
If you haven't noticed, the GOP politicians have not evolved much in the last hundred years. Look at their positions on women, the elderly, school children, immigrants, healthcare, workers rights, racial equality, taxes, guns safety, environment, marriage equality and more. The party attracts those behind on the evolutionary scale. They still believe in control by physical force and bans, a superior race, male dominance, a wealthy ruling class, unequal justice and so on. They lack empathy for anyone different than themselves. This has gotten so pronounced lately. I believe they know they are unable to keep up with human evolution and that is why they are resorting to any means to hold on to power. The world is just becoming too uncomfortable for them but unfortunately you cannot control Mother Nature. Fear kills heart and spirit and in time these Republican extremists will no longer have a significant voice. Hold on everyone and get out the vote. There is hope.
And not to mention, they don't seem to care or at least take action over all the school killings. If it weren't for gerrymandering and trying to stop voting in "blue" areas, they really wouldn't win. We've got to get out the vote to send a message!
This is all very relevant. Please keep spreading the message about those who have not evolved and who abuse animals as well as hold a desire to subjugate people.
It's hard to know what to say about this. It's so awful. I look at my own 7month old terrier puppy and I want to cry to think of that other little dog's shooting. Her nature was to be a bird dog.. train her!! All puppies bite as they develop.. train her and love her.. shock collars were also mentioned for this poor puppy s treatment. What a terrible life to give this beautiful creature and what a terrible death. Thank you Jess for a great piece of writing and perspective
Thank you for your clear eyed view. It seems to me Noem had a temper tantrum and took it out on two helpless animals. Why she felt the need to writer about it, I’ll never know, but I’m glad she did. I hope it takes her out of public office when her term ends.
She’ll be out of the Governor’s office this Jan, I believe she’s term limited out. She can’t really be prosecuted for this incident because it happened about 10-15 yrs ago. I think she put it in the book to impress the orange man. She thought it would make her look as tough & unemotional as he is.
I don't even own goats, and I still know that an uncastrated male goat will get odorous and have an attitude. If the goat in question was stinky and mean, it was her own fault and responsibility.
I also grew up on a farm with cattle and chickens, and with more than our share of "dumped" dogs (seriously - our house was near the local gravel-bar party spot, and was the spot of choice for abandoning your dogs - we had over 20 one year). We managed, somehow, to find homes for them all, because there was no humane society in the county at all. We had one dog we were going to keep, but he chased cattle, so we found him another home in town. We couldn't afford to have dogs around that kept harassing the cattle and running them through fences. It's not unheard of for a dog to be shot if it's in the act of chasing/killing livestock and can't be stopped, but it's not common in my experience, and is done as a last resort.
I don’t suppose South Dakota has a red flag law that would allow them to confiscate her guns now that she’s admitted that she has anger issues that she can’t control and uses guns to act them out.
This is sick on so many levels. I can maybe understand a farmer who takes a dog out and shoots it dead, if the dog is old, mortally injured and would die anyway or something akin to that. But this was just plain cruel. The pup should have been removed.
If you lack empathy with animals, you are going to act the same way around humans. This is who she is.
Bingo!

This woman is a scourge to society, period.

LOCK HER UP!

Wow! That adds even more perspective to just what we’re dealing with here.
God bless you for having to put up with all of her hatefulness and ugliness.
It’s a crying shame that people this awful somehow worm their way into positions of power and influence.
You should post this on Facebook! Start a petition now to impeach her cruel ass
LOCK HER UP!
Not much need to impeach her, because I believe she is term limited & can’t run for Gov again.
That’s a good thing.

All Noem wants to do is kiss the ring of the Maga 🍊🤡
Talk about bad optics!
How do you damage control a client who shoots puppies? I would laugh if I were not crying.
You are right. Animal abuse is an issue that unites all of us.
Anyone who kills a dog that hasn't been properly trained is lacking in both brains and heart. Why, oh, why, South Dakota people, did you elect her? She needs schooling.
Not sure schooling would help. May be “untrainable”…therefore…..
She needs to be removed from office.. then criminally punished.PERIOD..

Yes. Love of dogs is very often the ONLY thing I have in common with many conservatives. Let's keep this one link!

Truth. Brava!
I have always said that I trust dogs’ assessment of people. And I don’t trust people who don’t like dogs.
Me neither. That’s another reason to not like Trump, he’s never had a dog & doesn’t like animals.

How about let’s say, South Dakota rise up and move her ass out of office. Then criminally convicted her for animal cruelty

Kristi Noem is a sociopath. Like all sociopaths she lacks empathy for animals. I’m sure that carries through in her dealings with people.

She is a disgrace.
Im sorry for her poor daughter.
