I taught this, too. And grading essays on it over and over was something I miss about teaching. I also taught James Baldwin's "White Man's Burden" and fell in love with him reading that essay over and over. As a late blooming adjunct, I taught white and black students at a small college in rural Ohio.

Thank you for sharing. I taught that letter, too. So powerful. We also watched a documentary on the Children’s March. I was appalled that I hadn’t heard about that until I was an adult and a teacher.

I just finished reading "Letter" (courtesy of a Heather Cox Richardson post) about an hour before I read your email. For the first time.

I was a young teen when the first integration of public schools began to take place, and that began a lifelong sense of shame at the lack of acceptance of this vital action. I am ashamed that so many in America did not appear to feel the need to implement all the steps to freedom and justice that would make our country a better place for all human beings. Thank you, Jess, for sharing this and for doing what you can to help us all be better people.
