You are such a gem Jess! Thank you for traveling around and talking to people. You are not just preaching to the choir. Many different types of people see this information. We always hear about a seed of thought that gets through to someone. Just as you had an eye opening thought about religion. There is really nothing more important than spreading out a thought that will be discussed at a kitchen table, not a board room.

There really seems to be more vocal pushback that people cannot ignore. I know trump doesn’t have a chance of winning, but I don’t know if the level of cheating, corrupt SCOTUS, and corrupt republican party can have a terrifying impact that’s enough to break our system. I personally am not as fearful as many. Women KNOW safe abortion is critical in order not to be controlled by a man, LGBTQIA will not sit around and lose every inch of progress they have made over many decades of hard fighting. Sane brown people know trump and his old white men crowd don’t give one damn about them.

We’re going to win. Then we must demand the changes that prevent this from happening again. It’s very simple to say, is you are a felon, if you have raped, if you have killed, if you incite insurrection, you cannot be on a ballot, you cannot work anywhere, you cannot be around children, or schools or ever get a soapbox ever again!!

Go Jess!!! Even though you feel like you are speaking to the choir, sometimes that is exactly who needs to hear it! When I read your articles, it helps me be more articulate about why we are fighting against this current right wing insanity. I do not waste my breath on maga folks, but I will talk to people about the importance of separation of church and state and why we need public schools and libraries. Your articles have helped me find my voice and I’m SO thankful to have discovered you.

Jess, I live in NY and work for a company that provides technology support to nonprofit organizations. We were recently hired by Missouri Organizing Voter Engagement (MOVE) and the first thing I asked them was if they knew you! They told me they had met you, and were blown away that I knew who you were. I told them I'm a total fan girl. Never doubt that your voice has reach and that your efforts will bear fruit. Thank you for doing the hard work all day, every day!

The Democrats seem to do crisis politics. It’s about putting out fires and never getting to the long term issues. The overwhelming power the GOP has in every Red state is decades worth of plotting and planning and electing Republicans to every open position. They’ve grabbed people inch by inch. I don’t know why Democrats aren’t building coalitions in every community to take over the State Houses.

The gravest threats to human rights are coming from states where trained Republicans (many are actually crooks and corrupt) are dominating. The Republicans are eating our freedoms bit by bit. You blink and another one is swallowed.

Democrats have an entire elephant to devour. That means to catch up we have to be like a teenager at an all-you-can-eat buffet going back for thirds and fourths. Ravenous!

A first step is to take off the gloves and stop being so damn polite when it comes to discussing Trump and the individual Republican candidates across the U.S. Take every MAGA complaint and show them the state of the union. Explain in bold speeches that our economy is healthy. Explain how that affects them. They don’t want to hear how bad Trump is they want answers to their complaints and noone is talking to them in plain English

They care about immigration systems so don’t talk about individual immigrants because they don’t care about them. If our immigrant programs work, people will settle down. We’ll slowly get what is important to us.Democrats want to clean up the messes created by Republicans. That’s great but these ideas must be framed from the conservative point of view.

Talk solutions. If people don’t believe things are going well, trying to convince them they are is a back handed way of insulting them. Talk about Social Security, health care, hit on things they are worried about but won’t admit were created by Republicans.

Democrats have to realize you cannot beat out misinformation because their minds are closed. But you can get them to consider good ideas and promises to protect the Federal programs the want.

South Dakota is the state Citibank moved all its credit card business to in the 1980’s because of its lack of usuary laws. Laws that existed in New York where they were previously based, So yeah, the wealthy have been using these states as a work around for decades.

Expand full comment

John. Republicans have strengthened the rule of state laws which weakens us as a United States with constitutional protections for all. The abortion issue has made me much more aware of this. I was not aware of the weakening of, or lack of usury laws in many states. Everyone should have the same protections no matter where they live. I hope Democrats not only take the Presidency, House, and Senate, but have the courage and will to fight to review how our previous laws were so easily compromised and changed in favor of the rich, and make new laws that protect the common good. We need laws that do not allow any state to override federal laws so that no matter where a citizen lives, they will have equal protection under the law

Expand full comment

Linda,

The problems with any law start with the use of words to put in place a fencepost. If we do it at the Federal level, then that fencepost pops up in every state. And then it begs for someone to pass a Federal bill putting up the next fencepost, and then another and another. But the new fenceposts take everyone in a new direction not intended at all with the first fence post, restricting and channeling people in unexpected ways.

Viewing this from 100,000 feet up, the Constitution was framed the way it was because of the fears the writers had of saying something that could be used to enslave each other, or as in the fence analogy, restrict each other and allow dictators (Kings) to rise up and control the entire country, again. States Rights were vitally important to them, and are to us. So when you say that everyone should have the same protections no matter where they live and that we need laws that do not allow any state to override federal laws, it is a delicate thing to achieve, with fear and trepidation, not easily done. I do not believe that passing laws at the Federal Level will get the needed job done. As we have seen, the SCOTUS can throw Federal laws out like used dishwater.

That being said, we need to follow Jess Piper’s lead if we want to regain control of our Congress and Justice System and finally pass the Constitutional Amendments we need to protect our people and our democracy from the ridiculously wealthy and powerful people who have been working their plan to enslave America since the 1960s.

We can start by simply financially supporting our Blue candidates, wherever they are, and voting nothing but Blue this November.

All the best,

David

Up. The town paper which i subscribe to had published the names and political affiliation of those running in the primary next week. I compared the no. of republicans to the no. of democrats running for each office. I discovered that the majority of those running were republicans. Their opponites??? No one. So, yes. Democrats, libertarians, none. No choice except to not vote at all. We’ve got a lot of work to do. And don’t be afraid of being elected for the jobs. For too long, too many people have thought “politicians would do the right thing.”

Considering the voting record in MO, it is not surprising that politicians have assumed they could do whatever they wanted.

Of course, our assumptions were incorrect in both cases.

I truly think the GOP is going to be stomped into the ground in Nov, voting wise.

They are not prepared for people who care. They don’t know how to react without spreading fear.

Realistically, the GOP is afraid - for the first time in 50 years, their defacto leader has been exposed as a fraud and is a convicted felon.

Dan, I am afraid that I was one of those somewhat naive people who believed that the majority of lawyers, teachers, clergy, journalists, politicians , doctors etc would do the right thing, I painfully learned that people in all these jobs are on the same bell curve as the greater population. A.small portion are sociopathic, criminal, narcissistic , cruel , schadenfreude types; the majority are various degrees of average trying to have relationships, families, jobs , careers, interests, and contribute to a civil society in their own small ways ; then there is a small portion of truly courageous, insightful, compassionate , empathetic, intelligent leaders and participants that have dedicated themselves to altruism, research, science, trying to understand our planet, our species, and all the above mentioned jobs in a way that effects the masses. It helped me to be more realistic and less hopeless. Look for the helpers. I am not a leader. I hope my life as a nurse helped those whose lives I touched, but I think I can recognize leaders and help support them. I think that can be OK. Oh, and there is an edit function. I don’t expect any foot-stompin’ this Fall during the elections. American women will once again turn out for Trump and won’t give a hoot and a holler about their daughters’ futures. I see no groundswell of support for Biden from party leaders and can’t figure out why. No pressing back against those pro-Palestinian protestors who will gladly give up their bodily independence in order not to vote for Biden and thus assure the election of the weasel will make life worse for the last remaining Palestinians in Gaza or the West Bank. Where are our Democratic “loudmouths” who can suck the air out of a room as good as any lying Republican—but by telling the truth of course? Where is the media blitz once promised by Jamie Harrison—or is he truly the laziest man in Washington DC? Who’s going to help the down ballot candidates who need help and support in their runs against Republicans? Even if they may not stand a chance in Hell of winning, why do insist on ignoring them especially if they show potential? To assure they and their supporters will sit out the next election. I hope the Dems are ready to eat lotsa crow this Fall

Nancy, thank you for the link re Courtney Gore, “The pervasive indoctrination she had railed against simply did not exist. Children were not being sexualized, and she could find no examples of critical race theory, an advanced academic concept that examines systemic racism. She’d examined curriculum related to social-emotional learning, which has come under attack by Christian conservatives who say it encourages children to question gender roles and prioritizes feelings over biblical teachings. Instead, Gore found the materials taught children “how to be a good friend, a good human.”. She told residents that her backers were using divisive rhetoric to manipulate the community’s emotions. They were interested not in improving public education but rather in sowing distrust, Gore said. I commend her courage to go against her tribe and speak truth to power. I hope her work continues to strengthen Republican movements whoa are against the far right cult that has taken over the much needed real .republicans.

Deb, that is terrifying. Younger people won’t know public education was like, they won’t know they are being groomed, manipulated. indoctrinated. We have to have a strong federal government that does not allow states to supersede protections; protectiomsm that don’t allow religion or “conservatism “ as Prager U defines it to control sour children. They know that they can control people if they teach their version of society to the young, Remember Mao’s China?

Iowa does have an abortion exception for rape and incest. Our lovely GOP AG just finished a 17 month "audit," in which she suspended payment of services given to rape victims post-rape, like exams, Plan B, etc. A few Blue counties went ahead and funded the services themselves. In the past couple days, she announced the findings of her so-called audit, which I won't go into, and she FINALLY restarted the funding of those post-rape services that aren't even funded via taxpayer dollars, but rather court fees, restitution and fines. She did say she'd continue to allow Plan B to be "funded," but not abortions for rape or incest victims. Abortions for them are rare, given the services usually are used right after the event or report of the event. But it's the sheer callousness of how she even handled the whole thing. It wipes away any improvements in the system her "audit" may have accomplished.

And to think, we voted out Tom Miller for this woman.
