The obsession people have for thinness is the direct result of marketing a specific and narrow definition of beauty. It's about corporations making money. I grew up in the 70's when the average fashion model was 5'10" tall and weighed 110 lbs. After my second child was born I weighed 225 lbs, and I starved myself for a year and lost 100 lbs. I'm 68, and last fall I found out I have severe osteoporosis from depriving my body of food including calcium. My sister was bulimic and spent her life obsessing over weight and abusing laxatives. She died 4 years ago from colon cancer, a result of laxative abuse and malnutrition. Elaine, stay as you are. You're beautiful.

A MAGAt labeled me Commie Calder when I was mayor- because I wanted more community involvement. They chanted - I laughed about it. Your post reminded me how good it is to stay focused on the things that really make a difference.
I was mass attacked after I posted some mild criticism of Bernie Sanders when he was running in the Dem primary, the infamous "Bernie Bros" were relentless, nasty and threatening. I realize now they were mostly foreign bots, but it was very unpleasant. The ironic thing is that I actually liked Senator Sanders.
I remember those bernie bots. They destroyed his candidacy. The internet has made politics more vicious than ever, and so has Trump. There are so many mean people online now. They even attack Jeopardy contestants. Being herd animals, we are susceptible to being propagandized, some of us more than others.
I have to believe there is a special ring of hell for women who call other women fat pigs. (And it would be punishment enough for them all to be banished forever with one another.)
They must really believe they won’t age. It would be hilarious if they weren’t cruel and vile humans. Smile, they are going to age just like all of us 😉
The power of the patriarchy to set beauty standards by employing marketing and the media goes back generations. All little girls grow up brainwashed, taught that they aren't valuable unless they conform to the standards men set. They are the ones who are the real cruel and vile ones.
Jess you are a brave woman with a huge heart. A good example for the girls in Missouri. That other person who was throwing around insults displayed an astonishing lack of character. Didn’t she move to Texas? They are welcome to her.
The fact that such execrable language is protected under “free speech” underscores the lack of intellectual depth. Jess, You are amazing, don’t let anyone tell you different.! Besides which, you are as cute as a button.

My best friend Rose 🌺 is very large, and I love & admire her & see-feel beyond the weight issue - I know her life challenges too.
— here’s the rub, I have a bit of fat phobia; ditto homosexuality.
So it seems that when I ‘humanize’ a person by getting to know them, I do a ‘carve out’ for them.
— I guess I *internalized whatever it is in society that prevails that way … so I still must fight it.
Now in my 70’s with a few health problems & a lower body metabolism I’ve put on a bit of weight;
— my husband says the thing that bothers him the most is my self-loathing about it.
My faith says there’s going to be a resurrection of the dead & that the world will eventually become
what God had intended … so I console myself that ‘perfection’ can wait till then — yours & mine. 💠
