Yes Misogyny, conservatism, classism and racism tied up into one neat little narrative from Christian Nationalists who believe children who are impregnated should marry their “rapist” and live happily ever after in poverty. Pitiful excuse for representative government. Thanks Jess
Wikipedia's list of countries by fertility rate shows that the only countries with fertility rates above replacement are low-income Sub-Saharan, Arab, North African, or Middle East. It appears as though misogyny, conservatism, & classism work better than incentives. The Christian Nationalists should at the very least acknowledge the models they are hoping to emulate.
I read an article about “pro-natalists” recently. It made plain that they only want the right kind of babies born - white. Good luck to any woman of color who tries to get that incentive $$.
Thank you for this, Jess. My views align with yours, and as a 17 year old in rural NC, I was very glad I had options. Choice. You made the right decision for you, and I made the right decision for me. No babies raising babies. Those Christian Nationalists can kiss my childless ass.
All stick and no carrot is their approach. Pain, punishment, and cruelty but no coddling, comfort, or encouragement. Why these people cannot understand that happy, stress free people who have the security of a secure job, paid healthcare, and reasonable childcare, will opt to marry and have children is beyond me, unless I accept they are inherently sadists and enjoy hurting and controlling other people.
Christian Nationalist usually missing when it comes to vanishing fathers (or rapists in some cases). The most amazing accomplishments in our culture are single mothers. Never enough recognition. I'm always inspired when I see the gradual acceptance of these warriors and the vanishing stigma of single motherhood. The monetary bonus is a bad idea for several reasons, but realistic childcare assistance is a worthy goal for any administration.
I'm sick of all of it. The christian nationalists, any repuglican...I'm tired of listening to them throw immigrants under the bus, talk about how "bad" the country is, making "200 deals", ripping judges apart on fox "news", not supporting allies, not supporting Ukraine, using signal in the Pentagon, bad medical advice, vaccines?, misogyny, environmental chaos. I could type my sick of list for days and still wouldn't cover all of it. We just have to keep going, fighting, yelling, picketing, writing letters, whatever we can manage. I'd give my house, car and savings to get reasonable humans back in elected positions. Thanks for your voice and thanks for letting me vent again today!
Pardon me for adding to your list, AA. But I am angry and appalled that the rich, greedy white men who are salivating at taking total control of our country are already discussing selling off OUR government buildings for their profit.
These narcissistic, grasping plans to totally destroy critical core foundations and structures of our government should bring every able-bodied citizen out on the streets across America to peacefully protest the attempted theft of our property.
That amount is called a bonus, like an incentive.. but it doesn’t even pay the hospital bills for delivery, let alone maternal/fetal care. I’d bet anyone who gets Medicaid or some kind of assistance is ineligible.
I have had 5 miscarriages. Those weren’t free. In a world with incentivized birthing, miscarriages could be … punished maybe? Yuck.
I have had five live births. I sacrificed a lot, but I CHOSE to face those sacrifices of one parent income or two parents and paying high childcare bills. It’s gross to think of our family size being lauded as a pro-America thing vs. it’s being a couples’ choice to have a family. I can’t imagine having the govt involved in my family planning. Yuck!!
The Atlantic journalist, David A Graham, published “The Project,” which is/was a warning about how white Christian evangelicals will reshape the American family if they have their way. It is chilling and of course a direct assault on women, all women.
The House already passed the SAVE Act, which also will directly affect women’s ability to vote. It is framed, of course, against immigrants. Please call your senators especially in red states and implore them to vote NO on SAVE. It saves nobody but this regime’s dictator and his pawns.

I went to high school in Ozark, MO which is in Christian county. My county unfortunately falls under the district that Mike Moon represents.
Imagine my surprise when I see my high school posting about taking current high school students AND elementary school students to the MO capitol to meet the monster himself Mike Moon. Made me sick to my stomach that Moon was taking pictures with and having conversation with children from my community. These are the kind of people we need to protect kids from!!!
“The idea of paying women to deliver pregnancies makes my skin crawl.”
This is a normal response of anyone with an ounce of decency,
When we recount the history of slavery, we often omit the enslaved status of women,
“ They couldn't own property, enter contracts, or retain their earnings, and were legally subordinate to their husbands. Their legal existence was often suspended upon marriage, and they were expected to be domestic figures, focused on raising families. This legal status, known as coverture, significantly limited their autonomy and control over their own lives.”
“Coverture was largely abolished in the US by 1880, although some aspects lingered into the 20th century. Most states enacted married women's property laws that allowed women to own property and enter contracts independently of their husbands by this time.”
However,
“ The requirement for a husband or father's signature for a woman to open a bank account or get a loan ended in the US primarily in 1974 with the passage of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA). While some banks allowed women to open accounts independently in the 1960s, the ECOA made it illegal for banks to discriminate in lending based on sex or marital status”
“ Prior to the 1970s, marital rape was legal in every US state and only first became partially outlawed in Michigan and Delaware in 1974, then wholly outlawed in South Dakota and Nebraska in 1975.[1][2] The court case Oregon v. Rideout in 1978 was the first in which someone stood trial for raping their spouse while they lived together.
By 1993, marital rape was a crime nationwide.[3] Still, in the 1990s, most states continued to differentiate between the way marital rape and non-marital rape were viewed and treated. The laws surrounding marital rape in the US continue to change and evolve, with most states reforming their laws far into the 21st century. However, there are still states where marital rape and non-marital rape are treated quite differently under the law with the definition of what is "marital rape" or non-marital rape being disputed in some states.”
This still maintains the status of woman basically as property of her husband, he has control,
That is enslavement,
Women still don’t have equal pay for equal work.
“ In the U.S., the gender pay gap remains a significant issue, with women typically earning around 83 cents for every dollar earned by men. While the gap has narrowed slightly over the past two decades, it persists across various occupations and industries. Compared to other countries, the U.S. faces challenges in achieving pay equity, with some nations exhibiting significantly narrower gaps or even instances where women earn slightly more than men.
International.”
“ Countries with smaller gender pay gaps:
Luxembourg and Belgium in the European Union have very small gender pay gaps, with some data even showing women earning slightly more than men in Luxembourg.
Countries with larger gender pay gaps:
South Korea, Estonia, and Japan have notably larger gender pay gaps compared to the U.S. “
Women, having to be the ones that bear children, still are not supported with good medical care .
“In 2022, the United States had a maternal mortality rate of 22.3 deaths per 100,000 live births, significantly higher than most other high-income countries, including Sweden (2.7), Switzerland (1), and Norway (0). This means that in the US, about 22 women die for every 100,000 live births due to complications related to pregnancy or childbirth, compared to much lower rates in other developed nations”)
Do not have supportive, adequate maternity leave for their recovery and for the needs of a baby’s first year of life,
“ Other Countries:
Many countries offer paid maternity leave, some with durations exceeding a year and pay percentages ranging from 60% to 100% of the employee's salary.
Examples:
Norway: Offers 343 days at 100% pay.
Bulgaria: Provides 410 days at 90% pay.
Sweden: Offers 390 days at 80% pay.
Canada: Offers 16 weeks at 49% pay.
Germany: Offers 14 weeks at 100% pay.
Mexico: Offers 12 weeks at 100% pay. “
trump/vance/heritage foundation want to go back to what they consider was when we were great, when white supremacy ruled, when the rich ruled, when people of color and WOMEN were property, baby ma king machines with no rights, Or do we want to be a country that believes in “equality for all men” Oh yeah we need to reword thst to say all people so all those who are not cis men are no longer invisible and told “just assume you are included”
everyone has to pick a side, there are no false equivalents,
“ The strength and power of despotism consists wholly in the fear of resistance.
These people are sick. Truly sick. They are dictating to other people that they can do with their lives and to do it to children is beyond reprehensible. Thank you for posting this.
Suppressing compassionate and effective reproductive healthcare for women while promoting natalism is neither Christian or pro-life. This weekend during a sit in on the steps of our nations Capitol with Hakeem Jeffries and Cory Booker, Sebnator Reversnd Warnok (an actual Christian) characterized Christian Nationalism as afflicting the “biggest case of identity theft in America on Jesus.” i think he summed that up pretty well.
Let’s stop allowing Republicans to steal Jesus identity and the truth of what he preached.

Sadly, Cecile Marie, I fear it is the latter.
They don’t want babies, they want hamburger for their machine. You don’t give benefits to hamburger.
Well said!!

Has anyone said who the $5K will be paid to? Mother or father?

Happy Monday, Jess! Love reading you! Keep on being an amazing thorn in the side of the current remnant of the Republican Party. Godspeed!
5,000 to deliver a baby is just so gross.

We also have five kids, and I feel the same way.
Miscarriages may soon be criminalized; after all, you might have done something to cause it.
